Researching the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in Frederick County

 

ARCHIVE INFORMATION

This page tells you how to find more information about the archival materials listed in “Canal Mileposts” and how to access the materials themselves. The Catoctin Center compiled information on the archival materials held in local repositories by visiting them in person. The collections of non-local repositories were searched by using several online catalogs and databases available to the general public.

NUCMC – National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections

NUCMC is a free-of-charge cooperative cataloging program operated by the Library of Congress that creates online records in the RLG Union Catalog on behalf of eligible archival repositories throughout the United States. The Library of Congress provides Web interfaces for searching the NUCMC records online. Access is provided to both the RLG Union Catalog and OCLC.

RLG Union Catalog – Research Libraries Group Union Catalog

RLG is a nonprofit membership corporation of over 160 universities, national libraries, archives, historical societies, and other institutions with remarkable collections for research and learning. This database is the preeminent source of bibliographic descriptions for use in research and research collections management.

NARA – U.S. National Archives and Records Administration

NARA , an independent Federal agency, is America’s national record-keeper that maintains the historically valuable archival materials of the U.S. Government dating from the Revolutionary War era to the recent past. Materials maintained by NARA can be searched on the website through the Archival Research Catalog (ARC), which currently gives on-line access to approximately 40% of NARA’s holdings.

Library of Congress

Maryland State Archives

The Maryland State Archives is the historical agency for Maryland and serves as the central depository for government records of permanent value. Records date from the founding of the colony in 1634 to the 1990s. Included in the Archives’ holdings are colonial and state executive, legislative, and judicial records; county probate, land and court records; church records; business records; publications and reports of state, county and municipal governments; and special collections of private papers, maps, photographs, and newspapers.

The holdings of the Smithsonian’s archival collections, library, and specialized research collections can be found online in the Smithsonian Research Information System (SIRIS). George Washington University – Manuscript Collections, Special Collections Department

The Special Collections Department of the Gelman Library at George Washington University acquires, preserves, interprets, and makes available materials and information in three particular areas: Washingtoniana (the history of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area), the history of GW, and the University’s research and curricular needs. The Manuscript Collection, part of the Special Collections Department, can be searched through the department’s online catalog.
