The Catoctin Center for Regional Studies was created in 1998 by Frederick Community College and the National Park Service to promote the research and study of the history and culture of central Maryland and the adjacent areas of neighboring states. This region, in the midst of the Catoctin Mountain range, encompasses an area rich in history and cultural heritage, and one that has long been a crossroads of people and ideas. From early wagon roads and the National Road, to ironworks and glassworks, to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroads, to Harpers Ferry and John Brown, to Antietam and Gettysburg, to abundant farms and traditional folkways, to Fort Detrick and Camp David, the Catoctin region has played an important part in the history of America. Through research projects, teaching, collaboration with other historical organizations, internships, publications, conferences, workshops, and preservation efforts, the Catoctin Center for Regional Studies promotes the study of this region's history and provides students with exciting new learning opportunities.
