Beyond the Battlefields: Non-Military Civil War Sties in Frederick County
Frederick Community College
April 25, 2005
Explore non-military aspects of the Civil War in Frederick County by visiting sites where key events occurred and significant issues emerged. The meeting place of the Maryland legislature as it debated secession, the residence of the author of the Dred Scott decision, the home where Jeb Stuart and his Confederate Cavalry held the Sabers and Roses Ball, the site of a post-war Freedmen's Bureau school for African-American children - these are among the historic places we will investigate. We will begin the day with classroom discussion, and then travel by van to Kemp Hall, the Roger Brooke Taney house, Landon House, and a Freedman's Bureau school site. No battlefields, but lots of Civil War era history! Lunch will be provided.
