Mid-Maryland: A Crossroads of History, edited by Michael Powell and Bruce Thompson (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2005).

This volume is a compilation of papers presented at the Catoctin Center's Millennial Crossroads Conference in 2000. The book presents fresh perspectives by professional and amateur historians on issues of national concern as viewed through the prism of a region rich in history. Topics include studies of runaway slaves and abolitionists, the election of 1860, Civil War medicine and the role of civilians, Henry David Thoreau's support of John Brown, the 20th century struggle to desegregate and equalize salaries, the effort to preserve historical sites, and more.

"To Preserve the Evidences of a Noble Past:" An Administrative History of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, by Teresa S. Moyer, Kim E. Wallace, and Paul A. Schackel (Catoctin Center for Regional Studies and Center for Heritage Resource Studies, University of Maryland, 2004).

This is a study of land acquisition, interpretation of resources, public relations, and the preservation of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park during the twentieth century. It is the result of a collaboration between Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, the Catoctin Center for Regional Studies, and the Center for Heritage Resource Studies at the University of Maryland.
